JB Food Hunting

It wasn't just bad hair day but all-bad-day because almost every OOTD photo of me turned out horrific, unnecessarily + intentionally exposing my tired looking eyes and untamed hair no matter which angle I took to and so yeah, I'm pretty pissed for a supposedly good Saturday morning. Good thing is, the food didn't disappoint us.  God bless otherwise, I would have been even more irritable than I already am and this entry possibly will not exist at all. Lolx.

Anyway, the 3 eateries/places that I am going to share about are all located within the same town.

First stop at Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory. This is a very small shop easily missed if you are not observant enough.  A peep into the shop reveals more constraints in space. Like the wise always says "never judge a book by it's cover", well the saying totally fits the bill here.  The burger buns are sold in 2, 4 or 5 parts per pack and each pack depending on the flavour, are priced from RM3.50. Honestly, not too wallet friendly but I have to admit that I conceded with no further complaints to our otah bun order finally because the buns undoubtedly have the x-factors!
1. It was still warm in my hands,
2. The bun was fluffy,
3. The otah filling embedded within was quite generous.

One bite into it, it's like the taste of the old times has been rediscovered after it's been forgotten for years. The taste lingers on our lips even when our 2 parts of buns were already gulped down in a haste. I rate it 9/10, 1 being deducted because secretly, I still feel it's overpriced but since it's a situation where you cannot have the best of both worlds, I choose to live with it. Shh.

Then we found Restoran Hua Mui.  Hub says Chicken chop is also their signature dish.  Why say "also"?  Because well someone claim better!  I will come to that later. Let's just focus on Restoran Hua Mui for now.
On a mandatory note, I must state this - If you are hungry, skip this place! We ordered one plate to share. Waiting time was slightly more than 30 minutes though it didn't look crowded enough.

RM12

The presentation divulged minimum effort and the 3 miserable cut-size potato wedges got me echoing sarcastically for at least the next hour and it's not nice. The chicken chop isn't all bad though.  It was acceptable to me, crispy outside, quite tender inside and satisfactory marinated but the mushroom sauce was diluted excessively, it probably taste better without. Overall, I give it a 5.5/10.

So..we moved on to...

IT Roo - "The best chicken chop in town" it says.  Wow that's rather a manifested public announcement to make, I like to see how legitimate they are.  We should have went with fried chicken chop so to compare but too much of the same thing sometimes is not a good thing.  Eventually, we agreed in unison on grilled chicken chop with mushroom sauce, at least the sauce is the same hahaha. Anyway, we looked around and realized that their fried chicken chop was served without sauce.

Once the cutleries came in a basket, I was immediately impressed.  We ordered one plate again and the staff brought us 2 sets of cutleries without asking. The simple act of thoughtfulness sent me wondering in controversy what Restoran Hua Mui is lacking - the observance of surroundings and it's changes.

Picture does no justice!  RM14

When the chop was served in barely 15 minutes or lesser, I was clapping in my heart for them. That was acceptable waiting time, not 30 minutes or more! IT Roo passed yet another test. Ultimately, I know it will be the food that calls upon a return customer and I am right again to speculate that IT Roo will emerge as the winner.  Maybe I have a biased heart to begin with, but even with that, I had hub's affirmative that IT Roo is way better than Restoran Hua Mui in terms of sauce since it came topped with generous mushrooms and complements the grilled chop perfectly. Even the grill part was done nicely, no indication of overcooking and the wedges were fried to golden yellow. Hub and I wiped out the plate in no time.  Bear in mind that this was our second plate of chop! Absolutely palatable! So, I must stress - I AM NOT BIASED WITHOUT A REASON ha.

Singapore Youth Festival Celebrations 2014

Michael, together with Bowen Military Band was invited to put up a performance for the closure to the festival held at Gardens by the bay last Saturday.  Call me as predictable as the weather, but I will not give anything in this world to miss this significant milestone of my boy growing up into a fine young man.

Though I couldn't get a good glimpse of Michael on video but each of their small efforts reaps bigger results than I thought, the unity and uniformity in the team proved more than commendable. The unexpected appearance of the ever popular minions were immediately thrust into limelight, though I am not supposed to say this, Michael will be jealous.

I realized I had not taken many pictures at the Garden.  Typically, I've got supertree and Singapore Flyer duplicated too many. Too touristy, no?  But wait. I think the helicopter fly past with our state flag is somewhat post worthy?  Hahaha..give me some credit for fast fingers maybe?

Well, I guess I sort of feel compensated as I had conveniently took some nice photos with the perfect backdrop on the way out of Bayfront station earlier.  Vainpot! *sheepish smiles*

Special thanks to Martin for bringing Owen for a short tour at his family's club room with city view in Marina Bay Sands Hotel and the infinity pool at Skypark while hub and I rested our tired feets over a basket of skinny fries perfected with Mesquite Aioli dip and the most satisfying ice-blended at Coffee Bean.
